AI voice calls got worse before they got better, here's my timeline

Tbh I remember demoing AI phone bots back in 2021 and they sounded like a robot reading a script with zero pause. Fast forward to last month, I called my bank in Columbus and the automated voice actually laughed at my joke and asked a follow-up. Is anyone else seeing this jump get chalked up to better training data or did I just get lucky with a good deployment?

Man, I feel you on this. Last spring I had to call my internet provider about a billing mess and the bot sounded like it was reading off a grocery list. Then in October I called my car insurance and it actually said "I hear you, that's frustrating" and paused long enough for me to breathe. That threw me off so bad I checked if I was on a real person's line. It's wild how fast this stuff changed. The laugh thing is what gets me though, that's not just data, that's timing.
