Vent: Spent 4 hours on a thermostat that just needed a new battery
Had a call last Tuesday in a house near Denver where the AC wouldn't kick on, checked the breaker, checked the wiring, even pulled the control board. Turns out the thermostat was a cheap brand where the low battery icon never shows, so I wasted all that time for a $1 fix. Has anyone else had a simple job go sideways because of something stupid like this?

Man, that's frustrating. It's like how car dashboards now cover up the check engine light until the problem is already bad. Stuff is designed to hide the real issue so you have to dig deeper than you should. I notice this with appliances too. Fridges act like they're failing but really just need the coils cleaned. Everything is layered with unnecessary complexity to make you think you need an expert. But really it's just basic maintenance getting covered up. Makes you wonder if they do it on purpose to sell more service calls.

Check the owners manual, a lot of newer cars will pop a code if you do the key dance - turn the key to on, off, on, off, on without starting it. It'll flash the check engine light in a pattern that tells you exactly what's wrong. Saved me a couple hundred bucks on a loose gas cap that way.

Mia's point about fridges reminds me of my friend Sarah who spent a whole weekend thinking her fridge was dying. Turned out the condenser coils were just caked with dust, took her twenty minutes to clean them and it's been fine ever since.
