I wasted $85 on a rare succulent that died in 3 days because I didn't check if my apartment had enough light

Bought a variegated string of pearls from a booth at the LA plant swap meet and it turned to mush on my north-facing window sill, anyone else impulse buy a fancy plant without checking their growing conditions first?

That's the thing with hobbies, they all have hidden costs nobody warns you about.

Watching @val_shah say that makes me think about the people who quit their hobbies because they didn't know the real cost going in. Nobody talks about the time sink either. You think you'll just paint for an hour on weekends but then you're buying new brushes and watching tutorial videos for three hours straight. The mental cost adds up too because you start comparing your beginner stuff to people who have been doing it for years. That's the real hidden cost nobody wants to admit.

Oh man, tell me about it! I read this article once about how people who pick up guitar end up spending like 300 bucks on pedals and amps before they can even play a full song. It's wild. The time thing is real too - I started learning to crochet during lockdown and suddenly it's midnight and I've watched 12 different stitch tutorials instead of sleeping. And yeah, comparing your work to people who've been doing it for 20 years is a fast track to feeling bad about yourself. The hidden cost is definitely your own expectations getting crushed before you even get good enough to enjoy it.
