I watched a lavender field get replanted and it changed my whole approach to pruning

I was out at Baker Creek Farms in Missouri last month helping a friend with their lavender rows. They just ripped out 30 year old plants and started fresh with new soil mix and everything. The farmer told me I was cutting my own bushes way too late in the season and that's why they kept getting woody. Anyone else ever get told they've been doing a basic thing wrong for years?

Right about that woody issue, pruning late can really mess up the new growth since you're cutting when the plant is trying to rest.

Depends on your climate honestly. Where I am we get mild winters so late pruning actually works fine since the plant doesn't go fully dormant anyway. Seen plenty of people do it with zero issues if you're careful about the cuts.
