My friend swore by talking to her plants and I thought it was silly.

She gave me a small pothos last year and told me to try it for a month, so I started chatting with it while I watered. The thing put out three new leaves in two weeks, way faster than my other quiet plants. Has anyone else tried this and seen actual results?

Reminds me of the time my goldfish ignored me, @ray_sullivan.

Goldfish ignoring you is a classic, @troychen. They just don't have the brain power for that kind of social game. A cactus dying from an insult feels like a wild coincidence, not a real cause and effect. What's the weirdest pet reaction you've actually seen?

Actually, I gotta push back on the cactus thing a little. Plants respond to vibrations and carbon dioxide, and talking near them does increase CO2 levels right around the leaves. My grandma used to yell at her tomato plants and they produced like crazy, I always thought it was the extra carbon helping them grow. The pothos thing sounds like it might be real too, maybe your voice is giving it a little boost when you water. The goldfish ignoring you is kinda funny though, fish just don't care about our drama. So maybe it's not magic, just basic science you weren't expecting, right?
