My plant fact at a BBQ made two groups stop talking
I mentioned that the 'lucky bamboo' in a vase wasn't really bamboo at all. Half the group thought it was cool to learn something new. The other half acted like I spoiled a fun decoration. Now I'm wondering if sharing botany tips in social settings is helpful or just annoying. What's your take on this?

Oh, I once told someone their 'antique' rug was polyester.

What did they say back to you? I gotta know if they tried to argue or just got really quiet about their new "heirloom" lol. Those polyester fibers are a dead giveaway.

I mean, that's gotta be so awkward to point out. I totally feel for you because once people decide something is special, it's hard to shake that. Like @taraf83 mentioned, the fibers are a dead giveaway, but saying it out loud is just uncomfortable. Maybe it's just me, but I'd worry they'd get defensive or embarrassed even if they're wrong. It's like you're stuck between being honest and not wanting to ruin their happiness. Idk, stuff like that always puts me on the spot.

My aunt's "silk" scarf was acrylic.
