Showerthought: should botanical gardens keep planting non-native species or go fully native?
Last month I visited the botanical garden in Asheville and saw a whole bed of Japanese knotweed labeled as an ornamental, which blew my mind since I pull that stuff out of my yard every spring. Half the folks I talk to say gardens should stick to plants that evolved here because bugs and birds need them, but the other half say a good garden shows you the whole world. I keep going back and forth. Where do you all land on this?
