Spent $60 on a soil moisture meter that turned my plant care around

My fiddle leaf fig was dropping leaves for months, and I was overwatering it by guessing. The meter showed the soil was actually wet way down deep when the top felt dry. Anyone have a favorite tool that changed how you care for a specific plant?

Totally get that, it's wild how wrong our instincts can be. I grabbed a cheap one after killing a peace lily the same way, and now I check everything, even my "thirsty" ferns. It turns out some of them like to dry out a bit more than I thought. That little meter basically trained me to understand what wet soil really feels like a few inches down.

Honestly, the idea of a meter "training" you makes me a little nervous. I killed a few plants by trusting those cheap probes more than my own eyes. They can give weird readings if the soil is compacted or if there's fertilizer in it. Now I just use my finger, and my plants are way better off. It's a good skill to learn without a gadget.

Right? Those meters are like training wheels for plant parents. I was drowning a snake plant for months because the top looked dry. Stuck the probe in and it was basically mud halfway down. Now I wait until my ZZ plant's meter screams "dry" before I even look at the watering can. It's crazy how different each plant's needs are, even when they're all sitting in the same room.
