The bog boardwalk in Maine changed my mind about moss

I spent last Saturday at the Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and walked their 2 mile boardwalk, always figured moss was just a boring carpet on rocks. Then I saw how the sphagnum was actually building the ground itself, holding water and pushing the whole ecosystem forward inch by inch. Has anyone else walked a wetland and suddenly got why people obsess over these tiny green layers?
