Thought my pothos was fine but my friend's comment made me look closer
Everyone keeps saying pothos are impossible to kill, but after 8 months of mine getting pale leaves and no growth, I finally checked the roots. Turns out the soil I bought from a big box store was packed with fungus gnats and the roots were suffocating. Has anyone else had bad luck with those cheap potting mixes ruining a supposed easy plant?

Honestly sounds like you got unlucky with a bad batch more than anything. I've used the cheap stuff from Lowe's for years and never had issues, half my pothos are thriving in it right now. Maybe check if you're overwatering instead of blaming the soil.

Could be a watering issue, but nobody's mentioned that Lowe's runs different soil batches through different suppliers depending on the season. The bag I grabbed in July was a totally different color and texture than the one I got in March - same brand, same store. I've also noticed the moisture retention varies a lot between the bags with the drainage holes punched in the plastic versus the ones that are completely sealed. My parlour palm hated one batch so badly it dropped leaves within a week, but the next bag from the same pallet worked fine. Might be worth checking the lot number on the bag next time.
