Tried rooting cuttings in straight sand like the old nursery guy said and lost 11 of 12
Last month I took 12 trimmings off my grandmother's old hydrangea and stuck them in pure play sand like a retired grower at the farmers market in Dayton told me to, because he swore sand was all you need for roots. Three weeks later 11 of the 12 had gone black at the base and the one survivor barely has a nub of callus on it. I think my mistake was keeping the sand soaked and sitting the tray on the cold garage floor, since sand holds water forever and the stems just rotted. Now I'm wondering if I should try a perlite and peat mix instead, so has anyone here actually had luck with straight sand or was I just sold a nice story?
