Just realized my string line was off by a quarter inch on a job last month
Honestly, I was laying a brick patio for a client in Cedar Rapids and couldn't figure out why the drainage slope felt wrong. Tbh, I checked my setup and my line was off by a full quarter inch over 20 feet. It was because I'd set the pin on a loose piece of gravel. Anyone else had a simple mistake throw off a whole day's work?

That quarter inch over twenty feet is enough to mess up any slope. I spent half a day last summer trying to figure out a similar issue with a concrete form. My level was sitting on a tiny bit of dried mud I didn't see. It makes you double check every little thing after that.

Yeah, "double check every little thing" used to feel like a waste of time to me. That kind of story changes your mind fast.

Is a quarter inch over twenty feet really that big of a deal? Most patios would still drain fine with that tiny slope. It sounds like you caught a small error that might not have even mattered.
