Shoutout to the old timer in Toledo who told me to wet my brick before laying in July
I always thought dunking brick was a waste of time until he watched me fight a hot mortar bed for an hour and said dry brick sucks the water right out of the mix. Now I keep a hose and a dunk tank on the truck, and my head joints stopped pulling apart on 95 degree days. Anyone else change their mind about wetting brick after a rough summer pour?

Man, that old timer knew what he was talking about. I fought the same battle for years, especially on south facing walls where the sun just bakes everything by noon. The brick pulls that moisture out so fast the mortar never gets a fair chance to set up. Dunk tank is a game changer but I also started keeping burlap sacks soaked on top of the stack for the ones I'm not dunking. Cheap, easy, and saves a ton of rework when the temps hit triple digits.
