Yeah, Hannah's right about it not working in a real blow. My buddy tried that exact trick last spring when we were out at the lake. The wind picked up so much it just whipped the line around his fingers, he said it felt like getting snapped with a rubber band. He had to pack it in early because his hand was all red and sore. It seems like those little tricks are only good for a light breeze, not actual weather.

Wait, you saw someone doing this in Phoenix? In the summer? That's the part that gets me, it was probably 115 degrees out there. How was anyone even holding a line steady in that heat, let alone the wind?

Henry_murray has a point about Phoenix heat making everything harder. Saw a guy out there trying to palm the spool like that, and his hands were so sweaty the line just kept slipping. It's like, you need grip for that trick to work at all. A dry breeze is one thing, but add any kind of moisture or real wind speed and you're just asking for a burn. That thin line cuts right in when it gets some force behind it.
