Took me 3 years to stop butterflying my corners every time

Used to spend 5 extra minutes on every window corner cutting little triangles and tucking them in, then my foreman Steve at a job in Phoenix just showed me to snap a clean line and let the mortar fill the gap. Has anyone else had a simple trick from an old timer that saved you way more time than you thought?

Heard a similar thing from a painter I worked with once. He said don't bother cutting in perfectly around light switches and outlets, you can just scrape the paint off the plastic faceplate later. I tried it and it does work but I still can't help myself from cutting in tight anyway. Takes me back to the same amount of time but at least I know I could be saving it if I wanted to.
