Why does nobody talk about leaving the mortar a little loose on hot days?
I see guys on every job site mixing their mud stiff as peanut butter even when it's pushing 95 degrees in Phoenix. Last July I watched a crew lay a full block wall with tight mortar and by afternoon half the joints had hairline cracks you could catch a fingernail in. My old foreman Ray taught me to add a splash more water and work smaller batches above 90, and I have not had a single stress crack in three summers since. Anyone else notice this or am I just lucky with my sand mix?
