Blew $40 on a 'bargain' bag of rice and beans from the bulk bin last week

Grabbed a 25 pound bag of rice and a big scoop of pinto beans from WinCo thinking I was being smart. Turned out the rice had weevils when I opened it a day later and the beans were so old they wouldn't soften after 3 hours of boiling. Ended up tossing most of it in the trash and ordering a fresh 5 pound bag from the regular aisle for $8. Anyone else get burned by bulk bin deals that looked good but were actually just old stock?

And that's exactly why I've sworn off bulk bins for anything that's going to sit in my pantry more than a week. You got DOUBLE burned - the weevils AND the concrete beans. Honestly, WinCo's bulk section is a total crapshoot because people reach their grubby hands in there, and the turnover on stuff like rice and beans is SO slow that you're basically buying whatever's been sitting there for months. I've had the SAME thing happen with lentils that turned into mush before they even softened, and I bet those beans you got were from a batch that was already a year old when they bagged it up. At least the pre-bagged stuff has a chance of being fresher since it moves through the warehouse faster, but I still check the dates like a hawk now.

Man I gotta push back on calling WinCo's bulk section a total crapshoot. I been buying rice and beans from there for years and maybe I just get lucky but I've never had weevils or beans that wouldn't cook. You gotta check the bin before you scoop though, look for any bugs or dust. That bag you grabbed just sat around too long in your pantry.
