My coworker Brady called my meal prep sad last Tuesday and it got me thinking
Brady is this guy at the office who brings in takeout every single day, like Mexican food or a $12 sandwich from the deli downtown. He saw me eating my rice and beans with a frozen veggie mix and said "man that looks depressing." It kind of stung at first but then I looked at his receipt one day and saw he was dropping like $50 a week on lunch alone. My containers cost maybe $15 total for five days of food and I get to control exactly what goes in them. I realized he was judging the look of my meal but not the practicality or the savings. Has anyone else had a coworker or friend make a comment like that and then you do the math and realize you are way ahead?

Fifty bucks a week on lunch? That's insane for a single person.

Guess some of us just enjoy pretending we're fancy executives, huh @josephbailey? A sad desk salad and a lukewarm coffee does count as a budget meal, right? Must be nice to have that kind of disposable income for fancy lunches every day.

Think it depends on where you live and what you’re buying though. If you’re in a city and grabbing a decent sandwich or a bowl from a local spot, that’s like 12 to 15 bucks each time easy, especially with tip. So 50 bucks a week just means eating a normal lunch out five days a week, not some crazy splurge. Also, I get that not everyone can drop that, but calling someone insane for it feels a little harsh when some people just don’t have time or energy to pack meals every day. It’s not like they’re buying gold flakes on their salad or anything.
