People who dump rice into boiling water without rinsing are driving me crazy

I was helping a buddy cook dinner last night and he just poured dry rice straight from the bag into the pot. No rinse, no nothing. The water turned cloudy and the rice came out all gummy and sticky. Rinsing rice costs zero dollars and takes maybe 30 seconds under the faucet. Has anyone else noticed this mistake ruining cheap meals or am I the only one who cares?

Right, just toss it in dry and hope for the best. Honestly I think rinsing it strips off all the starch that gives sticky rice its texture, and some of the best fried rice I've had came from unrinsed grains, just ask @mark_green.

Wait, actually unrinsed rice can get super gummy though.

Right so what kind of rice are we even talking about here? Jasmine vs short grain changes everything. Because with jasmine you rinse it for separate fluffy grains but with something like arborio you'd absolutely murder the risotto texture washing off that starch. Seems like the real question is whether the "rules" people throw around actually apply to what they're cooking.
