Pro tip: I used to buy frozen veggies at the supermarket until I hit a farmer's market in Detroit last Saturday and grabbed a 5-pound bag of fresh broccoli for $3

Chopped it all up that same night, blanched and froze it myself, and now I've got 3 weeks of stir-fry bases for what I'd normally spend on two bags of Bird's Eye - anyone else find farmer's market deals way cheaper than store freezer aisles?

Actually, 5 pounds of fresh broccoli for three bucks is a crazy good deal even for a farmer's market. You might want to double check that price - most stands around here sell it closer to $1.50 a pound. Either way, buying in bulk and freezing it yourself is usually way cheaper than the pre-bagged stuff, and you control the quality.

I live in Portland where the farmer's market prices can be crazy high sometimes, but I totally agree with @ward.anna about freezing your own broccoli. Last summer I paid 4 bucks for a huge head that would've cost me 8 at the store, and I just chopped it up, blanched it for 3 minutes, and tossed it in freezer bags. It kept for like 6 months and tasted way better than the frozen bags from the grocery store. The key for me is making sure it's completely dry before freezing so it doesn't get all clumpy and icy. Honestly, taking an hour to prep a big batch has saved me a ton of money and I always have veggies ready to go.

Right, double checking the price is smart. Farmer's market deals can vary by the week and the stand. Bottom line, freezing your own broccoli is the way to go if you want to save and have good veg all winter.

Wait is freezing your own broccoli really that life changing or just something people say to sound fancy?
