Saw a bag of dry beans for $1.25 at Aldi in Columbus and it hit me how much things have shifted.

I remember when my grandma used to soak beans overnight every Sunday and now a lot of people act like canned is the only option, so has anyone here gone back to dry beans to save money?

Didn't used to see the point but I gave dry beans a try last month and honestly the savings are legit and they taste way better too.

Overnight soak in the fridge works best for me.

for real, overnight soaking in the slow cooker changed my whole bean game. what kind did you try first?

Real quick though, soaking beans in a slow cooker is risky because you're essentially keeping them at a low temperature that can breed bacteria if you don't get them boiling first. You have to boil them for at least 10 minutes before slow cooking to kill the toxins, otherwise you're playing a dangerous game with your chili. The savings are real with dry beans, just make sure you're handling them safely so you don't end up sick.
