That $28 grocery haul fed us for 6 dinners, here is how
Last Tuesday I hit up the discount aisle at our local Save Mart in Fresno and walked out with $28 worth of odd cuts and dented cans. I grabbed a big pork shoulder marked down to $1.79 a pound, plus three bags of frozen veggie mixes for 99 cents each. Slow cooked the pork all day with some cheap spices and turned it into tacos, rice bowls, and even a soup over the next week. The trick was planning each meal around what was actually marked down, not what I wanted to cook. Has anyone else tried building a whole week around clearance items, or do you stick to a set grocery list? I feel like I guessed wrong on two meals and want to hear what works for other folks here.
Take that clearance planning one step further by checking what day your store marks stuff down. Save Mart near me does meat markdowns early Tuesday morning and the bakery stuff goes half off around 7pm, so I time my trips around that instead of just grabbing whatever is left. Also grab the manager's special stickers on stuff like tortillas and cheese, since those are the things that turn a cheap pork shoulder into actual meals instead of just plain meat. Two of your six dinners probably flopped because you picked up something with no plan for the sides, and that is the part that gets people every time.
