That $9 bag of dried beans that almost ruined my Sunday potluck

Back in 2019 I was making my usual red beans and rice for a potluck in Nashville, but I got lazy and skipped the overnight soak. They came out crunchy after 4 hours on the stove, so I panicked and dumped in a can of butter beans I had lying around. Has anyone else had to rescue a bean dish with a random can, or is that just my kind of chaos?

Actually, I'm going to push back on the whole "rescue" thing. Skipping the soak and getting crunchy beans is a pretty clear sign you didn't plan ahead, and that's on you, not the beans. Canned butter beans have a totally different texture and flavor, so you basically served a mush and crunch combo that nobody asked for. In my experience, a failed bean dish is better served as a lesson in patience than patched together with whatever's in the pantry. Maybe next time just own the crunch and tell people it's al dente, that's more honest than pretending a random can fixed it.
