Vent: my sister swore dried beans were a waste of time, and she was flat wrong
My sister in Cleveland kept telling me I was dumb for buying dried beans instead of cans, said the soaking and boiling wasted gas and my time. A 1 pound bag runs me $1.79 at the Aldi near me and makes about 6 cans worth of beans, and a can is $1.09 each. So that is roughly $6.50 of cans versus under 2 bucks, and yes it takes 2 hours of simmering but I am home anyway. I did a pot of black beans on Sunday, tossed in onion and cumin, and got 8 meals out of it for the week. She came over and ate two bowls and did not say one word about the gas bill.
Why is it that people who call something a waste of time always seem to show up when the food is ready? I see this same thing all over, not just with beans. My neighbor swears by frozen dinners because cooking is "too much work," then complains she spends $200 a week on groceries. Nobody wants to hear that the cheap way usually just means doing a little more up front. Soaking beans overnight is not hard, it is just waiting, and waiting costs nothing. Your sister did the math wrong because she only counted the gas and forgot to count the cans. Funny how the people eating free bowls never bring a calculator.
