I thought the $75 LLC filing service was a scam until I checked my state's fee schedule
Last month I was about to pay a $299 service to file my LLC papers online because the site made it look official. Then a friend who runs a print shop in Boise told me to just go to the Secretary of State website myself and read the fee page. The state fee was $100 and the form took me 15 minutes, so I saved about $200 on nothing more than a markup. I only used a registered agent because I needed a street address, and that was a separate $49 deal. Has anyone else dealt with a filing service that added fees you could have skipped by going direct?
The $200 markup the filing service added was not "nothing." That company keeps their site running, handles payments, and deals with people who mess up their own forms every single day. You knew your state's website and you only had one simple LLC to file. Someone with three businesses in three different states or a name that needs a special check is going to burn way more than 15 minutes figuring all that out. Paying a service is not always a scam, sometimes it is just paying for someone else to do the boring part.
