Remember when contracts were a handshake and a nod, not 40 pages?

I was digging through old files last week and found a partnership agreement from 1987, it was two pages. Today my firm just reviewed a 42 page operating agreement for a coffee cart, what exactly changed in 35 years, is it liability or just lawyers justifying their hourly rate?
