The 10 year old NDA template that cost me a client relationship
I've been using the same NDA template since I started my consulting shop back in 2014. Last month a client in Austin asked to review it before we signed a $12k project. Their lawyer came back with 14 redlines, mostly because the template didn't mention data privacy stuff that's now standard in Texas. I spent two days negotiating terms that should have taken an hour. We still closed the deal but the client made a comment about my paperwork feeling dated. I finally paid $350 for an updated template from a local firm. Anyone else been burned by aging legal docs that you just never thought to revisit?

Made the same mistake myself a couple years back and lost a deal because my old form had zero mention of how we handle data. Spent $250 on an updated one and now I review it every January along with my insurance stuff. Honestly just having one current template saves me so much headache when new clients ask to see it.

My $75 template from 2019 still has the old GDPR line and I've never had a single client ask about it. Most small jobs don't even need that level of detail, and I'd rather spend my money on marketing than paperwork nobody reads. Feels like the real risk is overcomplicating things and scaring off smaller clients who just want a quick service.
