Vent: my old business partner sent a demand letter over $3,400, and the free legal clinic in Spokane made it go away
So back in March my old business partner, who I ran a small flooring gig with for two years, came out of nowhere with a lawyer's letter saying I owed him $3,400 for "unpaid profit splits" from jobs we finished back in 2022. Problem was, we never had a written partnership agreement, just texts and a shared bank account. I almost dropped $1,500 on a lawyer I found online before my cousin dragged me to a free legal aid clinic downtown in Spokane. The guy there, maybe 15 minutes into reading my texts, said the letter was basically a scare tactic and most of his claim was past the statute of limitations anyway. He helped me write a two paragraph response citing the state code, and I sent it certified mail. Two weeks later, dead silence, no follow up, nothing. Here's my stance: most small business owners panic and pay a lawyer before they even know if there's a real case, and half the time the other side is bluffing worse than you are. So who else has gotten one of these scary letters and handled it themselves? What did you say back?
