Was skeptical of using a template LLC operating agreement but it actually held up in court

I went cheap and used a free template from LegalZoom for my small cleaning business in Austin. Just had a client dispute over ownership shares, and the mediator said the template language was standard enough to enforce. Has anyone else had luck with basic templates for their business docs?

Templates are fine for simple businesses until they're not. Yours held up but that's because cleaning company ownership is straightforward. Try using one for a tech startup with multiple investor classes and you'll be in for a world of hurt.

Three weeks of awkward texts just to figure out what "major" means? Man, that sounds more like a communication problem than a template problem. You could have all the custom paperwork in the world and still get stuck on that kind of stuff if people don't talk to each other. I've seen founders with million dollar legal fees who still can't agree on what counts as a major decision. Templates aren't perfect, but they don't turn reasonable people into unreasonable ones either. Is it really the document's fault, or are we just looking for something to blame?

Aw man, that actually reminds me of a friend who used a template for his food truck partnership and it worked fine until one guy wanted to buy a second truck and the other didn't. The template just said "major decisions require a vote" but didn't define what counts as major. Took them three weeks and a lot of awkward texts to sort it out. Templates definitely have their limits, especially when you start adding real money and different opinions into the mix. But for a basic setup like yours, sometimes simple is better than overthinking it.
