Why does nobody tell you that a handshake deal in your own shop can sink you
I did a $4,200 panel swap for a contractor I'd known for 12 years and we never signed anything, just shook on it over coffee in my office. He got the bill, said the price was $2,800, and when I checked, my texts about the job never spelled out a number, so I had nothing solid to stand on. Am I the only one who learned the hard way that a written scope and price, even one page, is worth more than a friendship?
12 years and he all of a sudden "remembers" it as $2,800? Come on, that's on him for trying to knock 1400 off after the work is done, not on you for trusting a guy you'd known forever. A handshake still means something to most people and paperwork wouldn't have stopped him from just lying about what was on it anyway.
