Choosing between a new scabbard or a second boning knife for the shop
Our main boning knife handle cracked last week, so I had to decide between buying a whole new Victorinox scabbard set for $80 or just a replacement knife for $45. I went with the single knife to save cash, but now I'm carrying it loose in my bag and it feels wrong. Anyone have a good, cheap sheath idea that won't dull the blade?

The basic leather blanks are a good start, but they often don't have a welt, that strip between the layers to stop the stitch line. A blade can cut right through the thread over time. I'd look for a sheath that specifically mentions having a welted edge for safety, even in that lower price range.

You said you're carrying it loose and it feels wrong, I get that. That's asking for a cut bag or a dull blade. Have you looked at a simple leather sheath from a craft store? You can get a blank one for like ten bucks and just fold/stitch it yourself. Way cheaper than a whole new scabbard set.

Yeah @the_brian has a good point about the cheap blanks, but like rowan said, you gotta watch for the thread cutting issue. If you're handy with a little diy, you can buy a pack of pre-cut welt strips online for like five bucks and glue one in before you stitch. That fix alone makes those ten dollar blanks last way longer and keeps the blade safe.

Yeah, the blank sheath idea from @the_brian is solid for a quick fix. Did that with a kitchen knife once. Problem is, without that welt strip, the edge just rubs on the stitches. Wore right through the thread in a month. Had to redo the whole thing with a strip of thick leather glued in between. Takes more time but saves the blade.
