PSA: Don't waste your money on those expensive boning knives from that one Instagram ad

I dropped $150 on a set of those fancy Japanese boning knives I kept seeing advertised on my feed. They looked amazing in the videos, all sharp and sleek. First week using them on pork shoulders, the tip chipped off on the third shoulder. By the end of the month, two of them had bent blades from normal bone work. I called the company and they said it wasn't covered under warranty because of 'improper use.' What a joke. I went back to my old $40 Victorinox knife and it's been going strong for three years now. Has anyone else gotten burned by buying flashy gear from online ads instead of sticking with what works?

Oh man, same thing happened to me with a set I bought off some Facebook ad. The blades looked so cool but after like two chickens the edge was totally rolled over. I tried sharpening them and it was like the steel was too soft or something. My old Forschner knife from restaurant supply has outlasted three of those fancy ones and cost me like thirty bucks. Instagram ads are good at making stuff look professional but they don't have to hold up to real use.

Buddy of mine fell for the same Instagram ad trap. Dropped like two hundred on a set of those "artisan" boning knives with the hammered blades. First time deboning a turkey the handle on the biggest knife just came loose in his hand, like the glue gave out or something. He tried to tighten the rivets and the whole thing fell apart. Meanwhile his dad's old carbon steel knife from some swap meet still works like a charm thirty years later.

Started buying all my knives from restaurant supply stores instead.
