Got talked into a $220 'smart' water heater controller and I was back on the phone with the maker in 9 days

Everyone in my neighborhood Facebook group swears by these things so I caved in March and had one put on my gas heater. It worked for about a week, then it started kicking the burner on at 2am for no reason and my bill jumped almost $40. I called the company, the guy on the phone walked me through a reset, and when that did nothing he said 'the app runs a little behind sometimes.' I pulled the thing off myself that Saturday, put the old dial back on, and sold the controller to a guy across town for $90. Has anyone here had one of these actually pay for itself, or am I missing some setting that fixes the ghost heating?
