My three day battle with a $15 curtain rod that should've taken 20 minutes
Okay so I moved into this apartment in Columbus last month and thought I'd hang blackout curtains in the bedroom. Picked up a tension rod from the discount bin, cheap but looked fine. Got home, measured the window frame, and the rod was like 3 inches too short even at max extension. Fine, whatever, went back to the store, swapped it for a longer one. That one fit but kept sliding down every time I touched the fabric. I tightened it so hard the ends left marks on my paint. Then the bracket on the left side just gave up and snapped clean off the wall, took a chunk of drywall with it. I spent a whole evening patching that hole, waiting for spackle to dry, sanding, repainting. Finally borrowed a proper drill anchor kit from my neighbor and reinstalled everything from scratch. Three days total for something I thought would be a quick errand. The curtains stay up now but every time I look at that patch spot I get annoyed. Has anyone else had a supposedly simple home fix spiral into repairs that needed repairs?

That part about the bracket snapping and taking a chunk of drywall hit home. My buddy had the same thing happen with a shelf in his kitchen, the cheap plastic anchors just pulled right out and he ended up staring at a hole for a week. Then he had to learn how to use a stud finder just to hang one shelf, which took him two more trips to the hardware store. Funny how the "quick fix" stuff always turns into a whole project.
