Pro tip: went with the $340 repair on my 2011 Civic instead of the $2,800 trade-in, 8 months later it still runs fine
Back in January my Civic needed a new catalytic converter and the dealer quoted me $2,800 toward a trade. My buddy Matt kept telling me to just fix it since the car only had 140k miles. I paid a local guy in Sacramento $340 for the part and labor and honestly I was scared it was a waste. Eight months and 9,000 miles later it passed smog and still gets me to work every day. I think people panic sell cars way too fast when the repair is under a grand. What is the biggest repair you've paid for instead of just dumping the car?

Man, I read a thing a while back from some car site that said the average new car payment is pushing $700 a month now, which is wild when you think about it. Your $340 repair is basically half of one payment, and you got 9 months and counting out of it. I keep hearing the same story from mechanics too, that people roll in with something totally fixable and leave with a new car note because they got spooked by one big number. A catalytic converter is not even that big a deal on an older Civic, those things run forever if you just keep up with them. My uncle drove his to like 280k on the original engine, so 140k is barely broken in.
