Am I the only one who thinks the 'live edge' trend has gone too far? A guy in Portland tried to sell me a slab with bark still on it for a cabinet door
I was at a woodworking show in Portland about 3 weeks ago, and this guy had a booth full of slabs. I picked up one piece that was maybe 2 feet wide, still had the bark on the edges, and he tells me it's perfect for cabinet doors. I asked him how he plans to get a straight hinge line on bark that falls off if you look at it wrong. He just shrugs and says 'that's the charm.' I've been building cabinets for 19 years, and I've never seen so many people paying $180 for a board that's basically firewood. The whole point of a cabinet is that it opens and closes right, not that it looks like it fell out of a tree yesterday. I get why folks like the look, I do, but bark on a door that gets grabbed 30 times a day? That's not gonna last a year. Has anyone here actually built a full run of cabinets with live edge slabs and had it hold up, or am I just getting old and grumpy about it?
