Had a chat with a retired cabinetmaker that made me rethink my finishing process
I was talking to this older guy at my local lumber yard last Saturday and he told me I was overthinking my spray finishes. He said I spend too much time on sanding between coats and not enough on getting the first coat right. He showed me a piece he did 20 years ago with just a wipe-on poly and a rag and it looked better than most of my stuff. Now I'm second-guessing the whole 5-step sanding routine I learned at the trade school. Has anyone else gone back to simpler finishing methods and gotten better results?

Thin coats matter way more than how many you sand between.

Switched to a simple three-step sanding method with a good wipe-on finish a few years back and never looked back. My work actually looks cleaner now with less fussing around.
