I finally stopped using hardwood ply for drawer boxes and switched to baltic birch

Spent 5 years building all my drawer boxes with standard 3/4 hardwood ply because it was cheaper and easier to get. Finally tried a full kitchen with baltic birch after a customer complained about a drawer pulling apart after 6 months. The baltic birch held up way better - no chipping on the dados, screws actually bite, and the weight difference is real. Only downside is finding a supplier that doesn't charge an arm and a leg. Anyone else make the switch and stick with it?

Noticed the SAME thing with my old toolbox drawers. It's like we always think the cheaper option is fine until we actually see what happens when something gets used for real.

Ball bearing slides are totally worth it...

Yeah Emma, I finally learned my lesson on that too. Ended up just swapping those cheap slides out for a set of ball bearing ones and it made a world of difference. Sometimes spending a tiny bit more up front saves you a whole lot of headache later.
