Spent $310 on a used edgebander jig and it paid for itself in 5 kitchens
I do a lot of frameless cabinets and used to tape every edge. Six months ago I picked up a used banding jig from a shop closing down near Dayton for $310. I figured it would be a chore to set up, but the first kitchen I ran through it took me 3 hours less than usual. Then I stopped doing tape and glue on anything that was going to show. The jig is ugly and the fence is a little off on one side, but I just clamp a straightedge and go. The catch is the banding stock is pricier than iron on tape. Has anyone else here gone this route and does the cost of the stock bother you too?
I used to roll my eyes at guys who spent money on banding setups when tape is right there at the hardware store for cheap. Figured it was just tool snobbery. But hearing that it saved you 3 hours on the first kitchen alone makes me rethink it. That time has to be worth way more than the extra you pay per roll of stock. My tape edges always look decent for a month and then start peeling at the corners, so maybe the price gap is smaller than it looks once you count callbacks.
