The week every hinge fought back and I still miss it

Last spring I had five days straight where nothing lined up, the Blum hinges on a full kitchen run were all binding and I had to re-bore every door. But that same week a retired guy came in and watched me work for an hour, then handed me his old Stanley #71 and said it needed a better home. Has anyone else had a rough job turn memorable because of someone else's kindness?

Take the kindness without twisting the job into something sweet, because that week still sounds like a total pain and the Stanley doesn't fix the re-boring. The retired guy's gesture is nice, sure, but it doesn't make a frustrating job memorable in a good way, it just adds a silver lining to a bad memory.
