Warning: I tried pre-finished ply for a whole kitchen and now I have to eat the cost
So against my better judgment I let a client talk me into using pre-finished birch ply for the boxes on a full kitchen job, 14 cabinets total, because she wanted to save about $900 over me spraying them myself. I figured fine, saves me a day of finishing, pull the tape off the edges and go. Wrong. Every single dado and rabbet I cut chipped out along the line no matter how slow I fed the blade, and I tried three different blades including a fresh 80 tooth Freud. The finish is basically a hard shell sitting on soft wood, so the moment a cutter touches it, it flakes instead of slicing. I ended up running back to the yard twice for more sheets and eating the difference out of my own pocket just to keep the deadline. Client can see the chip-out inside the sink base now and she is not happy, and honestly I don't blame her. Next time I don't care what the client says, I'm spraying my own boxes and building that cost into the quote up front. Has anybody actually had luck cutting pre-finished stuff clean, or is scoring every line with a knife the only real answer?
