Almost drilled into a live wire hidden under attic insulation.

My cousin had a similar scare last year when he was cutting into a drywall patch. His whole body just froze when he heard the metal-on-metal scrape, thought he hit a pipe or conduit for sure. Turned out to be nothing but an old metal stud left behind from some weird remodel. He still keeps the piece he cut out on his workbench as a reminder to go slower.

During my kitchen reno, I always scanned with a basic stud finder before cutting. @sandra_garcia, that triple-check habit made me double-scan, which found an old nail plate I would've missed.

My confidence is usually my own worst enemy on projects like that. Last time I rewired a fixture I was so sure I'd flipped the right breaker, gave the wires a little tap with the back of my screwdriver just to be safe. Let's just say the bright blue flash and the smell of my pride burning taught me a triple-check rule. Makes that attic wire feel a little too familiar.
