I was wrong about those new fiber optic splice kits from Klein

For a long time, I figured the new quick-connect fiber splice kits were just a gimmick to get us to buy more gear. My boss in Phoenix gave me one to try on a job last month, and I was ready to hate it. I've always trusted my old fusion splicer, even if it takes twenty minutes to set up. But this little kit had the line connected in under five, and the signal loss test came back cleaner than my usual work. The cleave tool it came with was surprisingly solid, and the housing sealed up tight. I've used it on about a dozen calls since and haven't had a single callback. Has anyone else made the switch and found a brand that actually holds up?

Yeah, @carr.abby's point about the cheap ones is key. I tried a no-name kit once and the gel inside was a mess, didn't seal right at all. The good ones use way better connectors and a cleaner adhesive, so the splice doesn't get brittle. It's totally a case where the brand name actually means something for once.

Honestly, what brand was the kit you tried? Tbh I had the same bad feeling about them for ages. I finally caved and got a cheap one off the truck and it totally fell apart on the first pull. So maybe the brand really does matter. I'm still using my old splicer but you've got me thinking I should try a better kit.

Wait, @carr.abby, it fell apart on the first pull? That's just sad.
