PSA: check the tap before you blame the modem, learned that one in Akron
Had a customer in Akron last month who swore her internet dropped every night at 8pm sharp, and after swapping two modems I finally put a meter on the line and found a splitter backfeeding noise from an old cable box she never used. Now I always ask what else is on the coax before I touch anything, anybody else got a go-to first check that saves you a second trip?
8pm sharp every night is a weird one. Usually noise from a bad splitter is random, not on a schedule. Sounds more like something in that house kicked on at 8, maybe a TV or a DVR waking up to record, and the splitter just passed the noise along. I get why you check the coax now, but one old cable box causing a nightly outage feels like the story got cleaned up a bit after the fact. Most of the time a dead splitter just adds a little noise and nobody notices, it doesn't tank the whole connection like clockwork.
