Been using a generic ultrasonic cleaner versus the L&R T-14 for lens elements lately
I mean, the generic one was fine for basic grime, but the T-14's specific frequency and heating element got a 1960s Nikkor element spotless in one cycle where the other took three. The difference in how it handles old, hardened haze is pretty clear. Anyone have a good alternative for smaller parts that won't break the bank?

Wow, okay, so the fancy machine is actually worth the hype for once. My generic one just sort of vibrates angrily at old haze and hopes for the best. It's like comparing a pressure washer to lightly spitting on the lens. I guess sometimes the expensive tool is just the expensive tool.

The real cost is the time you waste fighting a cheap tool.

My buddy had the same issue with his generic cleaner and an old Canon lens. He fought with this one element for a whole weekend, multiple cycles, different solutions. He finally borrowed a T-14 from a local shop and it was just done in twenty minutes. The look on his face was pure defeat, like all that time was just wasted. It really showed me that for the really tough jobs, the right tool isn't just a luxury.
