Had to choose between a $20 helicoil kit and a $60 tap set for a lens mount repair, went cheap and it actually worked

Had a similar thing with my old Canon 50mm 1.8. The focus ring got all wobbly and I was looking at a $45 helicoil kit or a $90 tap set. Grabbed the cheaper one on a whim, figured if it didn't work I'd just buy a new lens. Three years later and that lens is still my go-to for portraits, the helicoil held up way better than I expected. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Read somewhere that those cheap helicoil repair kits are actually made in the same factory as the expensive ones, just with different packaging. Could be total nonsense but it made me feel better about going the budget route. The focus ring on mine is still tight after two years so maybe there's some truth to it.

Same exact lens. Bought the cheap helicoil tape for $12 on Amazon. That was four years ago, still works perfect. Sometimes the gamble pays off and you save yourself a hundred bucks.
