Nostalgia hit me while fixing a Canon AE-1 from 1978

Last week someone brought in an old AE-1 that hadn't been serviced since the 90s and I spent three hours just getting the shutter speeds right. It reminded me of when I started out 15 years ago and those were the only cameras I worked on, now it's all digital electronics and circuit boards. Does anyone else miss when repairs were more about gears and springs than soldering tiny components?

Spent a good chunk of last winter cleaning up an old AE-1 myself, actually. But I gotta gently push back on the exact year there, the AE-1 came out in 1976, not 78. The AE-1 Program was the 78 model, which added that little extra exposure mode and changed up the viewfinder display a bit. I mean, it's a tiny detail, but the difference matters when you're looking for parts or a service manual. Both are great cameras though, solid mechanical feel even with the electronic bits.

Did replacing the light seals fix the shutter capping issue you were having?

Charles always has to fact check everything, huh.
