Old lens grease taught me more than any manual

I used to just wipe off old grease and slap in new stuff until a 1964 Pentax I got from an estate sale in St. Paul seized up after 3 days. Turns out that brown grime was holding the helicoid together and the fresh lube was too thin for the worn threads. Anyone else had to match grease thickness to the actual wear pattern on camera bodies instead of following the chart?

Man, you sure that old grease wasn't just hiding a bigger problem?
