Pro tip: a stripped tripod socket turned into a 4 hour detour on a client's Nikon F3
A client brought in his grandfather's Nikon F3 last Tuesday and the base plate screw was seized solid. I hit it with a drop of penetrating oil and let it sit 20 minutes, which is a trick I picked up fixing old lawn mower carbs. When I finally got it loose the threads came out with it, so I had to drill it, tap it to 3/8-16, and epoxy in a threaded insert. Whole job ran me about 4 hours and I charged him $85, which felt low after the fact. Now I keep a tiny wire brush and a thread chaser within arm's reach of the bench. Anyone got a better way to free a stuck socket screw without risking the threads?
