PSA: I dropped $300 on a digital microscope for board work and it's been a huge letdown.

Everyone online made it sound like a must-have for checking solder joints and corrosion. Got a decently reviewed one, not the cheapest. The image is fine, but the working distance is terrible. I'm constantly bumping the lens with my iron or tweezers trying to get a clear look at a tiny capacitor pad on a compact digital camera board. My old magnifying lamp with a simple loupe was slower, but way less frustrating for actual repair work. For the price, I expected a game changer. Maybe I'm using it wrong? What tools do you guys actually use for close inspection on modern electronics without wanting to throw something?

My $80 Amscope stereo microscope has way better working distance for actual soldering.

Ugh, tell me about it. I had the exact same problem with mine, constantly knocking the lens. Felt like I was fighting the tool more than fixing the board.

Seriously, three hundred bucks? That's a brutal price for a tool that just gets in the way. The working distance issue is a known problem with a lot of those cheap digital scopes. You basically confirmed my worst fear about buying one.
